Rosina Girones

Rosina Girones has been working at UB since 1989 and is full professor of Microbiology since 2010, specialized in Virology, and is, at the present, the Dean of the Faculty of Biology.

Professor Rosina Girones is the team leader of the Laboratory of virus contaminants of water and food (VIRCONT) and the Research Group of Viruses, Bacteria and Protozoa of Interest in Public Health and Food Safety (VIRBAP) of the UB. She is an expert in the field of basic and environmental virology – an area of ​​knowledge in which she has published more than 120 articles in scientific journals – and has been the director of the former Department of Microbiology of the UB, and Coordinator of the Section of Microbiology, Virology and Biotechnology. She is member of the Water Research Institute of the UB (IdRA) and member of the Reference Network of Biotechnology of Catalonia (XRB) and has coordinated and taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses for more than twenty-five years. Rosina Girones has led many projects and doctoral theses related to the field of virology, metagenomics, food safety and health. In the field of international cooperation, he has directed environmental and health projects on viral indicators and environmental microbiology in countries in South America, among other initiatives.

Dr Girones was a postdoctoral researcher at the Hepatitis Viruses Section, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, NIH, USA and has been invited researcher in laboratories in Sweden and USA. Prof. Girones has been member of the Scientific Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and is at the present member of the Management Board of the HRWM specialist group of the IWA and Member of the WHO Water Quality and Health Technical Advisory Group.
